 Korat build out -Thailand

Project to Korat has been postponed to later this year. Date TBD. Interested persons may contact Peter for more information.

The ARCHIVE Institute is proud to announce its first field based project build out. This is scheduled to take place in Korat, Thailand in October 2006.

Details

The need for the institutes’ involvement in Korat arrives from the response to the environmental health problems caused mainly by pollution in Thailand’s second largest city, a problem exacerbated by over population. Continued neglect of these two destructive and interconnected agents promise to complicate future efforts at reversing the ill effects already created.

While the ARCHIVE Institute is primarily focused on research and design pertaining to spatial planning for and public health, its work simultaneously involves active local community development issues and seeks to organize field based projects around them. This is done in order to observe and implement the strategies developed out of on going work from academics, practitioners and analysts. Projects such as the upcoming build in Korat, Thailand will prove to be one such study. To better assist with coordination efforts, The ARCHIVE Institute has partnered with Habitat for Humanity and the Global Village program to conduct a build out in the industrial City of Korat, Thailand.

Korat, locally known as Nakhon Ratchasima, is Thailand’s second largest city. Many low-income families in Korat live in overcrowded dwellings which provide little protection from the weather and the polluted surroundings. This density from overcrowding coupled with the pollution hazard experienced by the city, is what mainly attracted the ARCHIVE Institute to partner with the Global Village program in addressing this problem. The institute intends to make follow up assessments following the completion of the build which is hoped at being the beginning of an ongoing relationship between the two organizations.

We are actively seeking volunteers to participate in this our first formal build out since launching our new online portal. We strongly encourage the invitation of participants from the field of public health as well as architecture and planning disciplines. We will not however discourage participants with a general interest in hands on building as there is certainly sufficient need for skilled and unskilled labor. The build promises to be an educational and uplifting project.

The institute welcomes participants to actively attend the build out in Korat, Thailand which will run from October 27, 2006 – November 3, 2006

Approximate in country costs: US$250 per person
