 HOUSING AND AIDS Version: FLASH

What’s the Connection?

Permanent housing can help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

  1. Research has found that homeless individuals are at a higher risk of HIV infection.
  2. Homeless persons are nine times more likely to be infected with HIV/AIDS compared to individuals with stable housing.
  3. High rates of drug and sex risk behaviors are also associated with a lack of stable housing.

Lack of permanent housing is a major problem for people living with HIV/AIDS.

  1. More than half of all people living with HIV/AIDS report a lifetime of housing instability.
  2.  Permanent housing is important for people living with HIV/AIDS because individuals with stable environments are more likely to continue necessary anti-viral treatment.

Recent studies show that the cost of medical care for a person with HIV/AIDS far outweighs the cost of basic housing.
The estimated lifetime medical treatment cost of each new infection is more than twenty times the annual cost of providing supportive housing.

Housing is health care.

Individuals without housing who are living with HIV/AIDS tend to have reduced access to healthcare, including necessary Antiretroviral Treatment (ART).

Proper design for housing.

  1. The design of a home should provide the comfort and amenities needed for someone living with HIV/AIDS.
  2. At the later stages of HIV+ person’s life, health facilities can be fitted in the home to aptly provide for end of life care.
